Weather Break with Signs of Life

A pair of mallards. Trailside, American River Parkway

Moss

Ferns grow on rock too

This tree grows from between two rocks. I can only imagine that after germination, as it grew it pushed its way between the rocks.

Buckeye germination, above and below. Buckeyes drop enormous amounts of huge seeds. It's a strange tree, being the last to bud out and bloom, but the first to drop its leaves at the end of summer, well before fall.

Antique sluice

Ibizan hound (8 mo.old puppy). I just happen to run into an acquaintance on the trail, also enjoying the oh-so-brief respite from the much needed rain.

American river just below the Folsom dam and Folsom prison.

Beautiful greens after a rain. At the end of summer, this will all be brown and dried up.

So strange to have the seasons you do. It's green here, but also brown with cold. The summer is when the rains fall and fall and the foliage runs wild.

((((hugs))))

California always looks as green as Ireland this time of year into March.

While you are looking for signs of life, we're all having a snow day in the Tacoma area!!

BTW, I just posted pics from our trip across the USA in '89, and one of them is of a tree growing in a rock in Wyoming.

Isn't nature fascinating?

LGS -this is northern/central California ~ halfway between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. It's considered a mediterranean climate.

Rose -our seasons are kind of opposite then ((hugs back at ya))

Jojo- I actually like this time of year because of the green. I think it even snowed in Oregon where my son is.

Val- definitely!

Wow, the buckeye pod photo is so cool.

It's hard for me to think of anyplace in the world being like this--we're so frozen right now.

great pics, so pretty to look at that while we're frezzing our bums off here!

over the weekend we got some gorgeous snow, about 5 inches, then it rained on monday. then last night we had thunderstorm warnings w/ 60 mile an hour winds, then it snowed again. crazy!

again, lovely to be able to look at something green:)

You live close to Folsom Prison?! It's built in Paradise! These photographs are achingly gorgeous - Claire, you could make millions with your own calendar. Fort Collins is brown now - even the gymnosperms look worse for wear.

I've heard Folsom called a lot of things, but never "paradise". Especially in summer. Then it's more like Hades.

Kind of the odd thing about Northern California. Lush and green here until late spring, then the dry grass makes everything look like shit.

Coming back here in October after a trip to New England with the fall colors is always depressing for me.
