Bombina orientalis

This post is for the Electric Orchid Hunter who requested pictures of the fire belly toadlets.
If you click on the first picture you will see mosquito larvae in the water. The babies gobble these up like candy. The biggest one is about the size of a quarter now. They are just starting to get their colors. I'll be glad when I can put them back in with their parents because that is a much bigger habitat and I can stop fishing for insect larvae in my turtle pond.

Plus:
I must have the ugliest hummingbirds in the world in my yard. They are quite simply, drab. I like them anyway.

What's the backstory w/ the toads? Why are you raising them? Did you rescue them?

jojo -I have had 2 fire belly toads for years. I had no idea what their sexes were. One day I see some little squiggles in their water. Tadpoles! They made sweet amphibian love and who knew? Then promptly ate their offspring. I managed to get five out. I raised them separately and they ate betta fish food. When they metamorphized I put them into a land/water setup in a 10 gallon tank. At first they were so tiny they had to eat wingless fruitflies. The smallest toad died for unknown reasons. Now they can eat tiny crickets. They have voracious appetites!

you are so dedicated! i would never had taken the time or made the effort to tear the wings off of fruit flies!!

we have humming birds b/c we have a half fence full of honeysuckle:) but my curtains and sheers have flowers on them and the birds actually bump into the window trying to get to the flowers. bunble bees do too, it's funny. i always think of the bee movie, "maybe this time, maybe this time."

Aw, sweet little babies.

kris -LMAO!! I bought the fruitflies that way. They are genetically altered not to have wings. I just get them at PetsMart.
I love honeysuckle. It is so dry here that it doesn't grow well. I have a pot of it on my patio and it hardly ever blooms!

There is something very appealing about a drab hummingbird; I mean, I feel like I would like this bird, were it a person.

Don't know how I have missed your blog... it is filled with such wonderful things (just as Lone Grey Squirrel said in his award to you :)) I love toads... remember them so fondly from my childhood wanderings down at the creek. What a fabulous person you must be to have your own as pets. Love this post :)

ps: There is positively no such thing as a drab hummingbird! They are all jewels... some just shine a bit more than others. :)

LGS -Thank you!!
Jocelyn -no matter what it's so cool to watch them right in your kitchen window.
tsduff -thanks for your visit and nice comments! I agree about the hummingbirds.

Cuteness - amphibians are awesome. And hummingbirds too, even the drab ones. Do people in the States never call them kolibris, or is that a Caribbean thing?
