Rattlesnake Bite or Broken Bone: You Decide

So hubby and I are on one of our thrice weekly bike rides down the American River bike trail, and for the second time in a week we see a rattlesnake sunning itself on the trail. We energetically veered around it. I wish no harm to come of it for it is the great consumer of pestilent rodents, however I wonder to myself to what extent I would inflict self harm in order to avoid the deadly Western Diamondback.

Next thing you know Pepe la Pew crosses our path. So again I wonder, what would I do to avoid being sprayed by an angry skunk? So I posed the question to my tandem partner. Here is what we decided:
To avoid the rattlesnake bite on the bike trail we would both be willing to lose some skin or break a bone.
To avoid the odoriferous renderings of Pepe, we would both be willing to suffer road rash. I went the additional measure of breaking any bone reasoning that skunk stink would make me throw up and I really hate to puke.

A few days later I'm reading the paper and I say to hubby, "OMG, there's an outbreak of rabid bats". He looked at me and asked, "Well, rabid bat or broken bone?"

Aw, hell no!

Thank you to the Lone Grey Squirrel for my first ever award! *blushes with delight*

That's a great photo, how on earth did you take it? If I look down at my feet while on the treadmill, I fall off!

Kris - living in California poses MANY dangers, besides fires and quakes!!! Whenever we'd hike on Mt. Tam, we'd always have to make sure no rattlers were sunning themselves on any sun-exposed rocks on the trails. Then there are the black widows and tarantulas.....oh, and the mountain lions that drift down into neighborhoods.

I concur w/ Jay - I'd totally fall off if I tried that shot! You guys ride on a bicycle built for two?

kris -I actually don't think the rabid bats are on the trail, but yeah, they will turn up from time to time.

jay -thank you!

jojo -it is a tandem bicycle. Our shoes are clipped into the pedals. I brought my camera on one of our easy rides when I knew I could 'coast' and concentrate on photography. Later I may post more trail pics.

Broken bone, for sure. Wait, can I pick the bone?

And can it be one of yours?

I'd take the rattlesnake bite if someone else was willing to slice it open and suck out the poison. You know, cause it works every time in the movies.

diesel -You are such a nut! No absolutely not!

Jeff -ouch and eww at the same time!

BD -not usually. they act weird and stupid people pick them up get exposed to the virus.
we're lucky here with a beautiful trail that is for walking, running, biking and even side trails for mountain biking and horseback riding too.

Gosh, we are lucky at the lack of seriously poisonous stuff in our environment in the UK. No venomous spiders, no rabies, our only venomous snake not deadly. The worst that can happen is if you are stung by a bee or wasp and are allergic.

Cool bike!! :)The lady at the local knitting store used to knit on the back of the tandem until someone ratted her out to her dh. ^_^

I think I'd take the snakebite since it would heal faster.

val -when my sister moved to London she had to jump thru hoops to take her dog. That, of course is entirely understandable!

candace- the bite of the western diamondback would see you dead long before it could possibly heal!
There is antivenom, but depending on where you are when it happens, well who knows how long it would take to get help and hopefully the local ER isn't out of antivenom.
See what I mean? Yikes.

Hi! Quick question that's totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when browsing from my iphone. I'm trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to correct this problem.
If you have any suggestions, please share. Thanks!
